Developing Pollokshaws Parish Church |
 |
David Zabiega, one of our Funding and Sustainability Development
Workers has recently been involved in supporting Pollokshaws Parish
Church as they develop their church building, and seek to position
themselves as a major community facility within an area which is about
to undergo complete regeneration. |
I have been involved Pollokshaws Parish Church of Scotland in Glasgow's south side since summer of 2006. The church occupies a B-listed building which is located in the centre of Pollokshaws and is the oldest building in the area. For many community organisations the church building is the only affordable option for hire in the area. The buildings are used by a wide range of church and non-church organisations ranging from a large Boys’ Brigade Company to mother and toddler groups, Alcoholics Anonymous and the local historical society.
Change is looming in Pollokshaws, with significant regeneration imminent. This will involve the demolition of high-rise housing and other poor quality housing stock; the construction of new private and social housing; the creation of new street patterns and public spaces; provision of new shops and community facilities, and a focus on historic buildings.
The Transformation Team is working with the church to help it identify the needs of its changing community and how its buildings could be used to meet those needs. The church has a real desire to help meet the significant needs of the local community and recognises that its building and people are an important asset in meeting those needs.
To help with this our community profiler has developed a statistical profile of the area to identify its key features and needs, as well as identifying some of the implications for the area of local developments. In addition we have commissioned a small piece of consultancy work to identify the needs which the church could effectively meet in the area. As the team's link person with the church I am coordinating this work and, through Fit For Funding, will be delivering training for the church in developing its ideas for the use of its buildings and applying for funding to help make those dreams a reality.

My name is John and I am from Pollok in Glasgow. I have been taking part
in the Fit For Funding programme. The workshops are helping me develop
skills that will benefit my community as we look at the best ways our
organisation can help improve the lives of people in our area.
